Sarah Rose Guitian Nederlof (b. 1993, Madrid) creates site-specific multimedia installations that incorporate photography, text, sound, sculpture, and (video) performances. Her work is driven by physical observations and experiences in public spaces, alongside a fascination with discarded materials like plastic bags, bottles, wrapping materials, and abandoned textiles. She explores the relationship between the human body, particularly the female body, and these objects to better understand how it interacts with public spaces and the various human and non-human elements within them. These relationships are presented in spatial assemblages, forming what she calls an "archive of the now." Her research is fueled by subjective experiences, especially the feeling of anxiety in public spaces. Her bicultural Spanish-Dutch identity also informs her work, bringing a sense of alienation from cultural contexts and the relationships formed within them.
Her process is research-oriented and often unfolds over long-term studio investigations, where she experiments with various media. Through this, she explores both her bodily experiences and her interactions with the collected objects. She works like an archaeologist of contemporary culture, investigating the traces left by others. The results of this research manifest in sculptural, performative, and relational installations, where the elements activate and influence each other. Her practice has expanded from photography to sculpture, and more recently, performance and video performance.
Born and raised in Spain, Sarah Rose Guitian Nederlof moved to the Netherlands at 18 to study at the Willem de Kooning Academy. Since graduating as an Autonomous Artist in 2016, she has continued to develop her practice in Rotterdam.
